projectgutenberg: In the round of our rational and mournful year one festival remains out of all those ancient gaieties that once covered the whole earth. Christmas remains to remind us of those ages, whether Pagan or Christian, when the many acted poetry instead of the few writing it. - G.K. Chesterton, ‘Christmas and the Aesthetes’ (1905) in Heretics [full text]

“You won’t burn in hell. But be nice anyway.”
– Ricky Gervais: Why I’m An Atheist (via david) ::Yawn:: Why isn’t atheism getting any smarter? I mean, it’s been around since before Jesus and yet its followers continue to make nonsensical statements like “I don’t believe in God because there is no scientific...

– best of craigslist: 911** Chevy van stolen from storage shed! REALLY PISSED! (via theoriginaljoefisher) There are TWO letters to the Corinthians, you horse’s ass. Assuming you meant the 2nd one since the first doesn’t have a verse 17 in its 5th chapter, I don’t really think...

When I see a slightly out-of-focus FB photo of someone’s face while they’re sitting in their car, a photo that was obviously taken with a cell phone camera, and there’s a comment like this under it: This picture is absolutely stunning… It’s like a photographer from TIME magazine climbed in the car witcha! I honestly wonder if life is even worth living at all.

Either It Matters Or It Doesn't Matter
This is something my husband has said a few times and lately it’s been ringing in my ears. For some reason, amplified in the volunteer world, there’s a tendency for people to have a scale of how much something matters that then dictates how much effort and care is put into doing that thing or into how it gets done. I don’t agree with this methodology. Either it matters or it...

projectgutenberg: FART CATCHER. A valet or footman, from his walking behind his master or mistress. - Francis Grose, Dictionary of the Vulgar Tongue: A Dictionary of Buckish Slang, University Wit and Pickpocket Eloquence (1811) [full text] Pah! This reminds me of a friend of mine who takes “Fart Walks”. She just disappears and comes back saying “Had to take a fart...

gretchenalice: Martha Stewart teaches you how to properly open a pomegranate. (No trace of irony here, it really is brilliant.) Also, I like how she says, “most people struggle with their pomegranates!” I will now eat more pomegranate seeds.

David (instructing someone using a cable): Pull it hard...That's what she said.
Me: She wouldn't say that. That's what HE said.
David: (to the first guy) Did you find it yet? What are you doing?
Me: Now THAT'S what she said.

from Orwell's Nineteen Eighty-Four
For weeks past he had been making ready for this moment, and it had never crossed his mind that anything would be needed except courage. The actual writing would be easy. All he had to do was to transfer to paper the interminable restless monologue that had been running inside his head, literally for years. At this moment, however, even the monologue had dried up. Moreover his varicose...

This Has Got to Stop.
I have to stop microblogging and writing short stories and short scripts. I see an article that’s three pages long and I heave a sigh and put it away. I’ve been struggling to write a feature length script for months now. All I watch are TV shows and movies feel like an eternity. I will read the two New Yorker articles sitting my tabs. I will! Later…..
