I just died. OCC
I sold four rings to my mother’s stylist yesterday and left four more on consignment.
Maybe I should refocus on that little venture…
An older, European (I think) woman who frequents our store (just to say “Hi” and call us “sexy”) came in today. Her name is Mona.
I noticed she was wearing a big, beautiful sapphire pendant surrounded by diamonds and I complimented her on it. Then I saw the earrings. And the bracelet. I said, “These are incredible!”
And they were - they were almost black in color and there was probably a carat worth of diamonds around the pendant and each earring as well as 2 carats’ worth on the bracelet.
“50th anniversary present” she said.
Then I saw the ring: 18 carat sapphire with about 2 carats of triangle cut diamonds around it.
I’m not exaggerating when I say that I got light-headed and almost cried a little.
It’s not the amount of money all those pieces represent. It’s the beauty - the natural, God-created beauty of the stones and the incredible skill of the cutter to facet it just so to let the light bounce in and out in all the right places.
It’s been awhile since I’ve been staggered by jewelry or art for that matter. (The last was probably Don Maynard’s “Maintaining Gravity” installation for CAFK+A) It’s like a glimpse into Heaven and all its pure, holy brilliance that we can’t even imagine now. It’s been awhile since I’ve had my breath taken away.
And now Mona and I have this lovely little secret.
“I used to work in jewelry,” I said, half-winking, half-ignoring my co-worker who looked on intrigued but unknowing. “So, I know.”
“Ah, yes,” Mona said, smiling with her collagen-injected lips. “Very expensive in Canada, this sapphire. You know.”
